Patriot Karate’s Competition Team
Our students compete in numerous tournaments throughout the year, representing Patriot Karate with skill, discipline, and dedication. We participate in multiple divisions, training in both Creative Musical Extreme (CMX) and Traditional karate techniques.
The competitions listed below are studio-supported events. That means our certified instructors are there on-site to coach, guide, and cheer on every competitor.
Our competition team trains together every Friday evening, building skills, confidence, and team spirit.

Divisions
Forms
The karate forms division focuses on the execution of a series of kicks and punches, while maintaining perfect stances. These moves can be made independently (traditional) to music (CMX).

Weapons
There is a variety of karate weapons that students can choose from, including: Bo Staff, Sword, and Kamas.
Students can perform either traditional or CMX forms using their weapon.
Sparring
Sparing can be broken down into two divisions: Point Sparing and Continuous Sparing.
Point Sparring is based on each competitor fighting until a point is scored, then the mat is reset and the fight continues.
Continuous Sparring is based on a three minute sparing match. Fighting does not pause until the buzzer sounds.
Both sparing divisions require full gear. Contact the Front Desk to learn more.
CMX vs. Traditional

CMX Events
CMX stands for Creative, Musical and Extreme. These forms focus on creativity as well as karate. These forms can include music and acrobatics.

Traditional Events
Traditional events focus on the ancient art of Japanese Karate Katas. There is a large emphasis placed on the stances and percussion of the student.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does my child have to compete to earn their belt?
No. Our competition team is completely separate from our regular curriculum. No one has to compete to earn their next belt. Students are required to compete in 1 sparring event to earn their black belt.
Does my child have need to have their own weapon?
Yes. If your child has chosen to compete in a weapons division, then they will need to have their own weapon. The Studio does not lend out weapons for competition. Talk to the Front Desk about purchasing a weapon.
Does my child have to have private lessons to compete?
No. Anyone is allowed to register for competition. Private Lessons with instructors are highly recomended if you are interested in competing in a Weapons or Forms (CMX and Traditional) division to help create and perfect your routine. Contact the Front Desk to find out more about private lessons.
