At Patriot Karate, we focus not only on American Karate, but also, we pay tribute to the original forms taught in ancient Japan, called Katas. These katas were created by the ancient masters to pass down karate from generation to generation and are at the core of karate.
There are five traditional katas, each of them is made up of a combination of blocks, punches and kicks, with the purpose of creating muscle memory and perfecting coordination and techniques of the practitioner.
The five traditional katas are:
1. Heian Shodan
2. Tekki Shodan
3. Bassai Dai
4. Kanku Dai
5. Jion
Each of these forms can be performed as an independent activity or as a group. By practicing these forms, every student can experience the physical, mental, and emotional components of karate.
When students train in a kata they demonstrate the core fundamental of Patriot Karate dedication. Click here to read more about Patriot Karate’s core beliefs.
Heian Shodan
The first Japanese form is Heian Shodan. Heian Shodan, translated from Japanese, means peaceful and calm mind. This is Patriot Karate’s kata. All our competition students learn this as their first form, as it focuses on the basics and demonstrates a student’s ability to be in control of their body.
Below is a short video of our third-degree black belt Instructor Duncan Lowery performing Heian Shodan.
