Patriot Karate proudly celebrated a major milestone as ten students were awarded black belts, marking years of discipline, perseverance, and personal growth.
Among those honored, four students earned their first black belt in American Karate, including a remarkable family achievement: a mother, Marquita Black, and her two daughters, Madison and Bailey, reached the milestone together, demonstrating the power of shared commitment and support. They were joined by a Austin Gaylor, who also earned his first black belt, representing the next generation of dedicated martial artists.
In addition, several longtime students were promoted to first-degree black belts in American Karate, Keidan Crowder, Molly Chandler, and Will White, including two Patriot Karate instructors, Westin McKissick and Ryleigh Sirmans. Their promotions recognize not only their technical skill, but also their leadership, consistency, and commitment to mentoring students on and off the mat.
The ceremony also included the awarding of two Shotokan Karate black belts, a significant honor within the traditional Japanese discipline. Patriot Karate’s Chief Instructor, Duncan Lowry, and longtime student Saylor Sheree, both earned their Shotokan black belts. These prestigious ranks were awarded by their instructor, Professor Dzue Hoany.
“Earning a black belt is not an endpoint—it’s a reflection of character, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning,” said owner, Crystal Sawyer . “We are incredibly proud of every student recognized. Their journeys are all different, but they share the same dedication and perseverance.”
Patriot Karate’s black belt graduation highlighted the school’s commitment to developing confident, disciplined individuals while fostering a strong sense of community—where families train together, instructors continue to grow, and students are supported every step of the way.
