Building Blocks of Character

The ultimate aim of karate is not in victory or defeat, but in the perfection of the character of its participants” – Gichin Funakoshi.

At Patriot Karate, we believe that we are not just training warriors—we are helping to build character within our students.

Karate teaches not only self-defense, but also introduces and develops key character traits with every step toward becoming a black belt.

Each cycle, our instructors focus on a specific character trait. They take time to explain the trait, encourage students to demonstrate it, and recognize it when they see it. Students who consistently exhibit this trait will be recognized in class with an added silver stripe on their belt and given a silver star at graduation.

Focus

A successful man is an average man with laser-like focus. – Bruce Lee

Focus is deciding what matters and having the dedication to do whatever it takes to reach your goals.

When we demonstrate focus – we are telling the world what is important to us.

How to earn your Silver Star this cycle:

  1. Challenge your child to set a goal and help them decide on the steps that they need to do to achieve it.
  2. Set aside time every day to work toward their goal.

These goals do not have to be karate-related, maybe its learning sight words, making their beds every day, or doing 10 pushups.

Don’t forget to share your goals with an instructor

Respect

I think every young child can learn through any martial art. They would then learn respect for life, for their parents, their country, & respect for the whole world. – Jackie Chan

Respect is a fundamental aspect of everything we do on and off the mat: respect for ourselves, others, property, and ideals.

When we respect ourselves and others, we gain a level of self-confidence that no one can take away. We also develop a sense of purpose and direction that we believe will follow our students for the rest of their lives.n

Parents, this cycle, help your student build character by

  • Holding them accountable for showing respect to themselves, their teachers, family, siblings and friends.
  • Share your child’s success with the instructors during this karate cycle. Encourage them to be respectful everywhere they go.

Demonstrating respect will earn your student a silver star.

Self-Discipline

Discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishments. – Jim Rohn

Self-Discpline is The inner strength to follow rules, make good choices, and control your thoughts, words, and actions.

What does self-discipline look like?

  • Can you get yourself ready for school on time, prepared and ready to learn?
  • Is your karate uniform clean and all your gear ready for class?
  • Are you using kind words, even when you are frustrated?
  • Do you follow the rules when no one is watching?

Set your goal, tell an instructor, earn your silver star.
